Honda Civic tops Canada’s list of most stolen cars

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The 1999 and 2000 year model Honda Civic SiR tops the list of Canada’s most stolen cars.

Consumer popularity also assures the cars will be popular with thieves. Its the second year in a row the Honda SiR has topped the list.

Rick Dubin Vice President of Investigations for the Insurance Bureau of Canada said “The Civics are easy targets.”

Dubin said that once stolen, the cars are most often sold to “chop shops” where thieves completely dismantle the vehicles. The automobile’s individual parts are worth more than the entire car.

The sheer numbers of the cars and their lack of theft deterrent systems make them thieves’ preferred choices.

1999 and 2000 Honda Civics do not come with an electronic immobilizer, however all Hondas from 2001 and onward are equipped with an immobilizer. Immobilizers will be mandatory on all new cars sold beginning September 2007. The devices enable an engine computer to recognize an electronic code in the key. If the code in the key and the engine don’t match exactly, the vehicle can’t be started.

In third place was the 2004 Subaru Impreza, while the 1999 Acura Integra came in fourth, with the 1994 Honda Civic rounding out the top five.

In sixth place, the 1998 Acura Integra, and the 1993 Dodge Shadow completed seventh.

When asked why early model vehicles are selected, he said that, “auto thieves continue to find it easier to steal older vehicles lacking an IBC-approved immobilizer. We’ve seen this trend developing for several years, and these results confirm it.”

Another Honda automobile, the 1996 year model Civic filled eighth place, with the 2000 German Audi TT Quattro in ninth.

The American 1996 Chevrolet/GMC Blazer rounded out the top ten.

None of the above cars had an electronic immobilizer.

A Great Denver Church, Where All Are Welcome.

Find Out More About:

Why is it so hard to find a good church in Denver? Many people who are looking for a good Denver Church, find it very difficult to locate the right church to attend. They are usually very hard to connect with for a number of reasons… Most Denver Churches do not have a very big presence in their community, for one reason or another. They appear to be really standoffish, in that they only meet within their congregations and do not work together in the community. Talk about divide and conquer! Well this is what is going on in Denver Churches. While many of them are good and provide a personal sense of belonging, they rarely connect with other Churches in the community. Many of the congregants are told to reach out to their communities for non believers, yet the Denver Churches do not reach out to other congregations and fellowship with each other. When a person wants to connect with a Denver Church, they will usually ask their friends if they know of a really good Church they could visit. This causes the Church goer to feel obligated to invite the inquiring person, to attend their church service. Then when the guest does not return after the first visit, the member of the church has many questions in their mind. Not only about why their guest did not return, but question if there’s something they are missing about their own church.

People never join churches, they join people. If a person can feel welcomed and accepted in a church, the odds of them returning are greater. And if they can relate to the people in the church, they will even forego the need for the preacher to be a good speaker. Here is what Barnum research shared in one of their recent articles…”When a person comes to a church they are more likely to return to the Church, if they can honestly say they felt like they had a personal encounter with God.” Young and old are seeking a personal encounter with God. A true encounter with God will change the most harden skeptic. If you are in the Denver area and you are looking for a great Denver Church, allow me to tell you about an awesome Denver Church called My Father’s House International Christian Discipleship Center, located at 14700 E. Mississippi Ave Aurora, CO 80012.

Many times people have mentioned how they felt the presence of God in the parking lot! And when they walked inside, they would always say they could feel the love of God from the congregation. This Denver Church has a dynamic music ministry that ushers in the presence of God like you would not believe. They are not stuck on professionalized corporate ministry, but they allow the presence of God to move freely. Hearts are literally changed during the worship service. Many times the Pastor would give the altar call before a sermon is preached, and hearts would flood the altar in response to the presence of God. My Father’s House has been in the Denver Metro area for over 14 years and has become one of the well established ministries among the Denver Church community. My Fathers House is led by Pastors Leslie and Lily Richardson. If you are in Denver and looking for a great Denver Church, come and go with me to My Father’s House International Christian Discipleship Center, “Where People are Empowered to Do the Will of God.”

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

U.S. automaker GM plans to close 1,100 dealerships

Friday, May 15, 2009

American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) announced plans Friday to shut down about 1,100 of its dealerships, in an effort to evade bankruptcy and lower its expenditures.

GM’s move comes a day after Chrysler, another U.S. car maker, released a list of 789 dealerships that it was closing. Unlike Chrylser, GM will not publicly announce the dealerships that it intends to shut down. Instead, dealerships whose franchises won’t be renewed after October of next year will receive a private letter telling them of the decision.

At the moment, GM has 6,246 dealers in the U.S. It intends to reduce that number to 3,605 by the end of 2010. GM said the dealerships that were to be closed are “underperforming and very small sales volume U.S. dealers.”

“They’re dealerships that are in most cases hurting, losing money, and in danger of going out of business anyway,” said GM’s sales, service, and marketing vice president in a telephone conference. “It’s a move that people could argue should have been taken years ago but this leadership team had no choice but to do it today.”

The dealers that are to be closed represent 18% of the firm’s dealership network, but only 7% of GM’s 2008 revenue.

Scottish artist Alan Davie dies at age 93

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

The death of Scottish artist Alan Davie was announced on Sunday. Davie, 93, was known for his colourful abstract paintings.

Davie’s career also saw turns as a jeweler, a jazz musician, a lecturer, and a poet. Born in Grangemouth, near Falkirk, in 1920, he studied painting from 1938 to 40 at Edinburgh College of Art.

It’s an urge, an intensity, a kind of sexual need

His father was a teacher who dabbled in art and his mother’s family was musically inclined. Upon seeing Coleman Hawkins performing in a music shop in Edinburgh, Davie borrowed £600 from his father to buy himself a saxophone. After serving in the Second World War, at which time he wrote much poetry later transcribed by his father, Davie toured with Scottish jazz bands.

Davie’s work was admired by the likes of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and David Hockney. Davie himself collected non-Western art and liked tattoos, graffiti, and ‘outsider art’. His final interview before death, with The Telegraph, gave an insight into how he viewed art: “It’s an urge, an intensity, a kind of sexual need[…] something I do from an inner compulsion, that has to come out.”

He initially avoided painting as a career at all, then spent several years earning money by other means whilst his paintings failed to sell. His exhibitions in the late 1950s, however, were highly successful and launched his career. He was in the habit of choosing titles for his art only after completion.

Despite a strong presence owing to his lengthy red beard and off-beat humour, he was shy; his international fame waned. Recent years have seen a revival of interest with price increases for his early art. London alone is host to three exhibitions this month including at the Tate.

Tate Britain calls Davie “one of the first British artists after the war to develop an expressive form of abstraction” producing “kaleidoscopic canvases[…] that the artist relates to his love of jazz”.

Why You Should Hire Packaging Waste Recycling Services

Paper wastage is a common phenomenon today. Giant companies, big businesses and even small firms waste tons of paper each day.

Paper wastage is a common phenomenon today. Giant companies, big businesses and even small firms waste tons of paper each day. Maintaining confidentiality is of the utmost importance especially when it comes to recycling documents and papers that contain sensitive information. Recycling companies provide a complete range of secured and reliable paper recycling. Generally, the scrap material from offices goes through several processes before reaching the shredding mill. There are innumerable risks involved and confidential waste should be disposed of properly, especially when dealing with papers containing information about your business affairs. The best course of action is to hire the reputable packaging waste recycling services.

Some of the key services provided by these professional recycling companies include waste material collection, material sorting and recycling and security shredding services, to name a few. The recycling company reprocesses anything and everything they can from office waste, packaging waste, mixed papers, cardboard, electrical equipment and even plastic and metal cans. Professional recycling services use environmentally friendly techniques and can help your business to better manage the disposal of waste material. Online you can find comprehensive information about paper recycling services. Hiring a professional recycling company is a much more feasible option than sending all waste materials to a landfill site.

Waste collection and recycling procedures can be customised to meet the needs of the client. The waste recycling company will offer wheelie bin collection services. The company is also likely to offer a regular service based on weekly or fortnightly collections. In waste recycling audits, a professional will visit the site and verify the efficiency of any recycling initiatives already in place. Once this has been done a plan can be agreed to improve waste material management. The audit will help a firm identify its overall waste cost and also contribute to the environment by keeping the landfill clean.

The recycling company will provide safe and secured document shredding services when required with minimal disruption. Paper recycling services should be done in a professional manner. Today?s paper recycling companies have advanced and innovative technology to shred documents. The papers are shredded into fine particles so that they can never be reconstructed. The shredding and recycling procedure will be undertaken on a periodic basis. Most recycling companies also provide an out of hours service to ensure that recycling procedure is undertaken with minimum disruption to the clients business. The documents and other confidential material received are shredded within 24hrs of collection. The recycling company will provide a certificate confirming destruction and detailing the date and time of document shredding, so that the client can be fully assured that the papers have been totally destroyed. Having a professional recycling programme in place makes both commercial and environmental sense.

Feared toll of Indonesian floods, landslides up to 130; dozens missing as bridge swept away

Thursday, December 27, 2007

Heavy rains in Indonesia yesterday triggered widespread flooding and landslides across the nation. It has emerged that last night a bridge was swept away by the swollen river it stretched across, leaving around 40 to 50 people missing in Madiun, East Java. Meanwhile, the total toll of those known or feared to be dead has reached 130.

According to local police chief Supardi in a telephone conversation with Xinhua the flood waters weakened a foundation, resulting in the collapse. At least twenty motorcyclists, car drivers and passengers are thought to be dead, but as of midnight, no bodies had been recovered. However, three bikes have been retrieved. 100 rescuers have been dispatched to the scene. Continuing heavy rain forced the search to be abandoned temporarily.

Java as a whole is the worst affected island; in addition to the bridge collapse most of the landslides occurred in two Central Java districts. Health ministry official Rustam Pakaya told reporters that at least 28,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes in central Java, although exact figures are not yet available. The Red Cross commented that 45,000 East Javanese people have been similarly displaced. Thousands are seeking shelter in mosques and other public buildings.

Landslides buried houses and made roads impassable, while hundreds police officers, military personnel, local officials and volunteers have been digging with farm tools and even their hands to search for survivors. Heavy machinery is available but the road conditions have prevented it arriving at the areas where it is required. Jakarta has dispatched aid in the form of five tonnes of biscuits and instant meals, ten tonnes of baby food and multiple boats.

Heru Aji Pratomo, head of the disaster management centre in the worst-hit district of Karanganyar has confirmed the recovery of twelve more bodies. This brings the total confirmed death toll in the area to 48. He said that most bodies were recovered from three metre deep mud and required heavy digging machinery to retrieve. 28 remain missing.

Local resident Siswo told AFP “Suddenly I felt my house shaking, and I thought it was an earthquake. When I got outside, I saw that the houses next to mine were already covered by earth,” and that it struck twelve neighbouring houses.

In the next district, Wonogiri, disaster management centre head Sri Mubadi told reporters they had retrieved two more bodies, reaching a total of six, with eleven more missing. He also confirmed that they currently have no access to heavy equipment.

In Tawangmangu about 1,000 rescuers were also searching for bodies and survivors without the aid of heavy machinery. Three more bodies were retrieved today.

Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir toured a Karanganyar village, at which time he commented that he felt the disaster had been caused as a form of divine revenge, saying “This was likely caused by immoral acts going on here,” and “This could be a lesson to be learned.” The 69-year-old served two years after being linked to the 2002 Bali bombings, before having his conviction overturned last year.

Chalid Muhammad, director of Walhi, an Indonesian environmental group, had a different opinion. “For five consecutive years landslides and floods have occurred in Java, claiming many lives. The main trigger is ecological destruction caused by deforestation, forest conversions and chaotic spatial planning,” Chalid told Reuters.

“There have been no adequate efforts by the government to protect the people from disasters. When the landslides happened officials were on holiday and there was no access of heavy equipment to the affected areas.”

Paslode Woodworking Gun Review

Paslode Woodworking Gun Review

by

Allan Clearpool

It has been over a month now since I first began using the Paslode Cordless Finish Gun, and I could not be any more pleased with it. I used it again a couple of weeks back to get a door to swing in the opposite direction, and it came through for me and reminded me how much time and energy a cordless nailer saves once again. It is the perfect woodworking gun.

The Paslode is a cordless finish gun that comes in both 16 gauge and 18 gauge versions. The best thing about the this gun is that there is no need to dig a compressor out of the garage and lug it over to where the project is. No need for finagling with a tangled up rat s nest of a hose, either. When this woodworking gun is really nice is when you have a quick simple project to do. It s particularly irritating when you have to drag out a compressor and hose just to shoot a few nails. This can sometimes make the setup take longer than the actual project.

Another thing that I was amazed about with this product, is that I expected it to not have much strength and sturdiness to the nailing connections it would make. I just assumed it was like most other finish guns, which are good fro little else besides base & case (running baseboards and casing around doors). But you would be surprised ant how sturdy and strong the nails are.

I used the Paslode to build an outdoor shed once. I was in one of my bad moods and just wanted to get the job over with in a hurry, and the last thing I wanted to do was deal with a compressor and hose. I actually built the entire shed with the Paslode and just added screws afterwards. The entire project moved so fast.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the Paslode is 100% worth the price you would pay for it. You can find them for about $250, which is fair for a comparable finish nailer, but when you factor in that all the other guns need an air compressor, which in itself costs around $300, not to mention a hose, the Paslode will actually save you money.

There is even a little hanger on the gun so you can hang it on your tool belt or jeans pocket. They do require gas cartridges, but they last fotr what seems like forever, and the batteries charge quickly and run for hours on a single charge.

Now that I have experienced for myself the benefits of using a cordless woodworking gun, I ll never go back.

Assassin of Turkish-Armenian journalist ‘treated as national hero’

Saturday, February 3, 2007

According to news reports from Turkey, a number of the members of the Turkish security forces, though unofficially, are treating Ogün Samast, the assassin of Hrant Dink as if he were a national hero.

For instance, after being taken into custody, Samast was filmed shoulder to shoulder with the Turkish police, in front of a Turkish flag and a quote from Turkey’s founder Atatürk: “The nation’s land is sacred. It cannot be left to fate.”

On January 24th, Ogün Samast was transferred to the Bayrampa?a prison, Istanbul’s largest prison. Before the transfer, inmates from a section of the prison were temporarily moved to another section, which, as a result, housed more than 100 inmates, 80 more than its maximum capacity. Then, the now-vacant section, often subject to inmates’ complaints regarding bedbugs, was cleaned and disinfected. Finally, the walls were painted, a brand new cotton bed was put in, and red carpet was laid out on the floors of the section.

When Samast was brought to the Bayrampa?a Prison, inmates witnessed that he was welcomed with cheers and applause by the jail management, soldiers, and the guards. Witnesses also report that Samast was given two guards to serve him. He ate kebab, a luxury food compared to the food given to other inmates.

After four days, Samast was transferred to the Kand?ra F-type Prison.

Ultra-nationalist elements of the Turkish society seem to have penetrated into the Turkish security forces. These events resulted major Turkish newspapers such as Sabah, Radikal, and Vatan to accuse the Turkish security forces and the Turkish state of supporting, endorsing, and cooperating with the killers of the journalist.

A 52 year old Turkish-Armenian journalist, Hrant Dink was assassinated in front of the Agos newspaper office, at the Istanbul district of Osmanbey, where he worked as the editor and a journalist. Dink, a brave journalist who was not afraid to discuss one of Turkey’s most controversial issues, clearly called what happened to Armenians in 1915 when the land was being governed by the Ottoman Empire the Armenian Genocide.

Following her father’s assassination, Dink’s daughter, referring to the fascist obsession with pure blood, said:

They shot my father. Is their blood purer now? They were afraid to face him, they shot him in the back.

Large numbers of people marched protesting the killing of Hrant Dink on the day of his funeral, carrying placards that read “We are all Armenian” and “We are all Hrant Dink”.

One dead in ski chairlift accident in Switzerland

Thursday, January 3, 2008

At 12:50 pm on January 3, a ski chairlift ride cost a German skier’s life and another German woman was left with serious injuries after the lift cable derailed from the mast sheaves in a windstorm. The derailed chairlift is the two-seater Fallboden lift at Kleine Scheidegg, next to the Jungfrau mountain in Switzerland.

Two more Australian tourists were lightly injured. About 20 further people had to be evacuated from the stopped chairlift. Wind velocity peaking at 90km/h prevented a helicopter from rescuing the trapped passengers, complicating the rescue.

According to 20min.ch, the lift was manufactured by Garaventa AG, a major Swiss ski lift company, now a part of an international group Doppelmayr/Garaventa. When contacted no one was available for comment.

Shortly before the accident, a wind alarm was activated few times by a 60km/h wind. The operator decided to close the lift and waited for the lift to unload all passengers; at the moment of the catastrophe the bottom station of the lift was already closed, but 75 passengers were still on the lift.

According to the Swiss law, every chair lift must be designed to withstand a lateral wind load of 250 newtons (approx. 25kg) per square meter. However there is no law limit at which wind speed or lateral loads the chair lifts have to be stopped. This safety aspect is left to the responsibility of the operator. The safety of the lift was checked by the Swiss Federal Office of Transport in January 2006. This chairlift accident is said to be the worst in Switzerland for the last 8 years.
