Haunted attractions in Texas prepare for 2013 Halloween season

Thursday, September 12, 2013

With Halloween approaching, numerous haunted attractions all over Texas are preparing for the big “haunt” season. Directors and staff of such attractions must invest significant time preparing their buildings; such efforts gear up significantly during September. Wikinews caught up with some owners of these attractions to learn more about the hard work it takes to prepare for opening night.

Terror Nights, an attraction in Tyler, opens for the season on September 27. Ryan Laepple, owner and director of the haunt, states he’s currently involved in “a blur of safety inspections, auditions, actor training, and last but not least event advertising.” Laepple went on to say he stays “pretty busy until the show opens on the 27th and then things calm down some. As long as not too many things in the haunt break at once.” Dean Jarnig, the director of Zombie Manor in Arlington, said he and staff have recently been spraying flame-retardant chemicals and installing new lights. Jarnig also stated he and staff are working on a promotional video for their attraction, which opens on Friday September 13.

Hangman’s House of Horrors in Fort Worth is celebrating both its twenty fifth anniversary and final operational year. Some individuals who act in these attractions refer to their fellow actors as extended family. This year, some sources have even encouraged holiday job seekers to consider working at a haunted attraction to earn money. One whimsically listed the job’s benefits as “[…] free uniforms, a complimentary hair and makeup consultation and make-over, inspirational background music, plenty of on-the-job exercise opportunities and more.” Long a staple in American culture, “Haunted Houses”, as they’re commonly called, range in size from small garage-sized projects, up to multi floor buildings outfitted with the most elaborate of lighting and special effects.

Iran’s morality police crack down on un-Islamic dress

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

The Iranian police forces have faced criticism from Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi, the head of the judiciary who was appointed by Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for their re-invigorated campaign to do away with un-Islamic dress.

Ayatollah Shahroudi proclaimed, “Tough measures on social problems will backfire and have counter-productive effects.” Others have, of course, made it clear that un-Islamic dress can lead to moral corruption, engender innumerable vices, and hurt the Islamic character of the nation.

Some believe that no one had any issue with the creation of an Islamic atmosphere. The core of the matter revolves around the implementation of the Islamic dress code; additionally, heavy-handed measures should be shunned. For instance, Mehdi Ahmadi, information head of Tehran’s police, told Al Jazeera: “Some citizens may complain about the way the law is being enforced but they all agree with the plan itself.”

According to one student, “You simply can’t tell people what to wear. They don’t understand that use of force only brings hatred towards them, not love.” Nevertheless, Hojatoll-Islam Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, Iran’s interior minister who is in charge of policing, prognosticated positive feedback from the populace when he said, “People are unhappy with the social and moral status of the society. They expect that the fight against social insecurity be properly implemented.” Thus, Hujjat al-Islam Pour-Mohammadi re-iterated the necessity of proper implementation and methodology towards the restoration of morality in the Islamic Republic. Islamic officials and religious people affirm that this is indispensable to promote righteousness, curb sin, and bring open sinners to justice.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, hijab became mandatory in Iran for every woman including foreigners after over 98% of citizens voted for an Islamic government. Women may face caning up to 74 strokes for failing to observe hijab. In this recent crackdown, the authorities have arrested many citizens throughout the country. Not only have women been taken into custody for their hair being uncovered on their foreheads and tight clothes that show body shapes, For men they need to cover from knee to their waist as according to Sharia. Even a foreign journalist was detained because the photograph on her press card was indecent.

It has not been clear whence the directive for the re-newed clampdown emanated. Some have blamed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while Gholam Hossein Elham, the government spokesman, stated to reporters, “The police work as agents of the judiciary to confront crimes. The government as an executive body does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.” The following pre-election speech seems to corroborate this latter statement:

In reality, is the problem of our people the shape of the hair of our children? Let our children arrange their hair any way they wish. It doesn’t concern me and you. Let you and me overhaul the basic problems of the nation. The government should fix the economy of the nation and improve its atmosphere…[It should] better psychological security and support the people. People have variegated tastes. As if now the arch obstacle of our nation is the arrangement of our kids’ hair and the government disallowing them <He chuckles>. Is this the government’s responsibility? Is this the people’s merit? In actuality, this is the denigration of our people. Why do you underestimate and belittle the people? It is the real issue of our nation that one of our daughters donned a certain dress? Is this the issue of our nation and the problem of our nation?

Similar to the magnetic motors, Hojomotor also uses a series of magnets that are strategically placed around a rotor. The unique feature of Hojomotor is that it uses two sets of magnets, stator magnets, and armature motors. Stator motors are fixed to the inside of a cylinder shaped casing. A rotating drum, which is placed inside the drum, is the rotor. Another set of magnets, armature magnets are attached to this rotating drum. Because of this unique feature, after putting an initial input into the system, this motor ensures the motion is self-sustaining. Electricity is generated via a belt that is connected to a conventional electricity generator. It belt is similar to one under the hood of the car.

The Pros:

Google to invest in alternative energy

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

On Tuesday, Google announced a new strategic initiative aimed at producing electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal power that is cheaper than electricity produced from coal. Google plans to spend tens of millions of dollars on research and development in 2008, and to invest hundreds of millions of dollars to bring energy projects to market.

The new initiative is dubbed “RE<C”, for “Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal.” It will “focus initially on advanced solar thermal power, wind power technologies, enhanced geothermal systems and other potential breakthrough technologies,” according to the company’s press release.

“We see technologies we think can mature into very capable industries that can generate electricity cheaper than coal, and we don’t see people talking about that as much as we would like,” said Google Co-founder Larry Page. “Solar thermal technology, for example, provides a very plausible path to providing renewable energy cheaper than coal… We are aware of several promising technologies, and believe there are many more out there.”

Page said that Google’s goal is “to produce one gigawatt of renewable energy capacity that is cheaper than coal,” and that the company is “optimistic this can be done in years, not decades.”

According to the company press release, one gigawatt is enough to power a city the size of San Franscisco.

Some Wall Street analysts questioned the wisdom of Google’s new initiative.

“I’ve written off Google’s competition as a threat to Google’s long-term market share gains,” said Jordan Rohan of RBC Capital Markets. “But I haven’t written off Google’s own ability to stretch too far and try to do too much. Ultimately, that is the biggest risk in the Google story.”

Rohan added that “The only positive byproduct of this project that would be anything other than environmental is that it might make Google managers and executives even prouder of the fact that they work there, and it may help retain key employees who think their goal is to do good in the world.”

Travis Bradford, an analyst for Prometheus Institute for Sustainable Development, said he was having “a bit of trouble trying to figure out the business logic” of Google’s move. “They don’t have any advantage in doing this other than a big, huge pile of cash.”

On the other hand, Brett Conrad, manager of the Blue Earth Fund, said that Google’s $211 billion market capitalization and $13 billion cash “gives them a fighting chance” at succeeding in the energy market. “I think they’re looking at a $7 trillion market. I think it would be as tough for Google to do it as a big oil company.”

The leaders of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) met in Guadalajara, Mexico on Sunday and Monday. The leaders of the three countries (Barack Obama of the United States, Felipe Calderón of Mexico, and Stephen Harper of Canada) promised to work together on swine flu, organised crime and green issues.

Despite disputes in a number of areas remaining unresolved, the three leaders succeeded in presenting an amiable Three Amigos image. The three leaders expressed solidarity, and an understanding of each others position.

The unresolved issues include the buy American clauses in the US stimulus package, tit for tat reprisals by the Mexican authorities over Canadian visa restrictions on Mexican travellers, and the US ban on Mexican trucks from crossing the border.

Risking the ire of human rights activists back home President Obama expressed support for President Calderón’s war against drugs saying he had “great confidence” in the Mexican authorities.

Acting on intelligence gathered over a year the Federal Police arrested five drug cartel members on Sunday and publicly paraded their captives and a number of weapons ,including automatic rifles, on Monday. Speaking during a summit of North American leaders Calderón played down the threats on his life, saying that the cartels are being destroyed by his policies.

Some 11000 have died since President Calderón’s took office in 2006 and made the war on drugs a cornerstone of his administration.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced by a court in Burma to a further three years of house arrest for violating the terms of her previous sentence. However her sentence was immediately commuted to 18 months on the orders of Burmese head of state Senior-General Than Shwe out of respect for her father General Aung San and out of a desire for “national reconciliation”.

The period of her arrest will prevent Aung San Suu Kyi from participating in the general elections scheduled for 2010. The sentence was immediately condemned by Western leaders, and breaking from their usual silence, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) through its current chair Thailand issued a statement expressing disappointment. The ASEAN statement and talk of further European Union and United States sanctions are unlikely to have any impact on Southeast Asian country given the support of India and China.

The Chinese issued a statement calling for the world to respect Burmese sovereignty and laws, and is seen as an indication that China, a veto power will not support any United Nations actions.

John Yettaw whose unauthorised visit led to Aung San Suu Kyi’s prosecution has himself been sentenced to seven years imprisonment, four of which will be for hard labour.

Four employees of the Rio Tinto Group have been formally arrested in China on charges of bribery and using improper practises in its negotiations with Chinese companies. The Chinese accuse the men of improperly learning the negotiating position of Chinese companies wishing to buy iron ore, and through this charging 700 billion yuan (US$102.46 billion) more then they would otherwise have been able to

The four were initially held on espionage charges and have been held since early July. The formal charges allows the Chinese authorities to hold the four a further seven months as it prepares its case against them. Their arrests followed the collapse of an attempted by Chinese owned Chinalco to raise its stake in the Anglo-Australian Rio Tinto Group to 18%.

Michael Jackson will be the star of a film to be released on October 28, some four months after his death. The film will be primarily cut from footage of Jackson rehearsing for the series of concerts that would have taken place at the O2 in London, but will also feature interviews with Jackson’s family and friends.

The film becomes possible after AEG Live, the promoter of the O2 concerts, reached an US$60 million agreement with Columbia Pictures for over 100 hours of footage of Jackson preparing for his swan song.

“He was the architect of ‘This is it‘, and we were his builders…” said Kenny Ortega, Jackson’s collaborator on the project “…it was clear that he was on his way to another theatrical triumph.”

Accept Credit Cards Online To Increase Profits 5 Steps

Find Out More About:

By Marie-Claire Smith

Starting a business is pretty easy – almost anybody think of an idea and try to make it work. However, staying in business and actually turning a profit after 3 months, 1 year, 5 years or longer requires a serious set of entrepreneurial and all-around business skills.

Most small business owners, especially online entrepreneurs, get started by putting together a website to showcase their goods or services. Only then do they start to tackle each of the important details that are required in order to start turning a profit successfully. One of those details is how to accept payments from customers.

For Web-based businesses, being able to accept payments usually entails the ability to process clients’ credit cards. And, that usually means being set up to accept payments via the online shopping cart connected to the website. Note that even Web businesses who only accept orders by phone will still want a way to process credit cards, given that cards remain such a popular payment option on the part of most individual and business customers alike.

The fact is that when you open yourself up to accepting credit cards as a valid form of payment on your website, you are giving your customers a lot more ways to pay you. That will almost certainly translate to increased profits for your business.

If you want to accept credit cards online to increase your profits, here are 5 steps to doing so:

1. Think about how you will be accepting cards from clients:

There are four main ways to accept cards from clients: in person, over the phone, via mail, or online. For in-person card acceptance, you will need a terminal that allows you to actually swipe clients’ cards. For the others, a virtual terminal – operated via your phone or personal computer – will work fine. The virtual terminal is software-based, so there is no need to invest in any equipment.

2. Find a merchant account provider that offers a low discount rate:

One of the main differentiators between the various merchant account providers out there is the discount rate each one charges for their services. This is simply a percentage of each transaction that they charge against your account, deducting it from the total amount you would normally receive. It goes without saying that you would rather pay as low a discount rate as possible.

3. Ask about the other fees you would pay in working with them:

Merchant account providers will also charge you other fees, such as an application fee, a monthly service fee, and even a minimum monthly transaction fee. Be sure to meticulously ask – and then record – each fee from each provider you speak with so that you can easily compare them later.

4. Make sure that their payment gateway works with your e-commerce shopping cart:

If you will be primarily processing your cards online, check with the merchant provider to ensure that the payment gateway they offer is compatible with the e-commerce shopping cart you use with your site.

5. Compare at least 3-5 merchant account providers:

Now that you know what to look for, it is time to compare at least 3-5 merchant account providers. Keep track about what each one says about their discount rates, other fees, and types of terminals offered. Then, make your decision.

Take these 5 steps to setting up your business to accept credit cards online.

Creator of website satirizing Glenn Beck on winning domain name case

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Wikinews interviewed the creator of a parody website satirizing American political commentator Glenn Beck, about his thoughts after prevailing in a domain name dispute brought by Beck before the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland. Florida resident Isaac Eiland-Hall created the website in September, and it asserts Beck uses questionable tactics “to spread lies and misinformation”. Eiland-Hall was represented in the case by free speech lawyer Marc Randazza.

Wikinews interviewed Randazza for the article “US free speech lawyer Marc Randazza discusses Glenn Beck parody”, and previously reported on the Beck v. Eiland-Hall case in articles, “US free speech lawyer defends satire of Glenn Beck”, “Satirical website criticizes Glenn Beck for ‘hypocritical’ attempts to silence free speech”, and “Glenn Beck loses domain name case over parody website”.

Denunciations of Scandals Threaten UN

Tuesday, April 19, 2005

Denunciations of corruption, bribe, collection of bribes from refugees [1] and of sexual scandal involving the peacekeepers [2], [3] threaten the Organization of the United Nations (UN).

The gravest denunciations involve the aid project to Iraq, called Oil-for-Food. Grave denunciations of bribe exist, superfluous accounting and collaboration with the ex-dictator Saddam Hussein, against staff of the UN, companies and politicians of several countries. Even the secretary of the UN, Kofi Annan was suspicious of participation in the plan of corruption. And also grave doubts still hover about his son, Kojo Annan.

The gravity of the denunciations threatens not only the credibility of the UN, but its existence.

Secretary Kofi Annan said that he is going to promote reforms in the organization. [4]
